Using ARP Packets for Intrusion Detection

ARP packets are the primary means by which Who Is On My Wifi initially identifies computers on the local network. We find that using ARP packets as opposed to ICMP ping packets is much more effective on a modern local area network because of the increased use of Personal Firewalls by individual users on their computers.

Personal Firewalls have the ability to block regular ping requests.

Personal Firewalls have NO ability to block arp requests.

Because of this, older programs that relied on "pinging" computers to map a network have become less and less effective over time.
