MAC Spoofing and Intrusion Detection
When one computer appears to be something or someone else, that is called spoofing.
Because we are looking at MAC Addresses on a network to look for intruders, one of the dangers in creating a good Hardware Intrusion Detection System would be handling MAC Spoofing. Basically, how does the Detection System handle someone putting in a fake MAC Address on their computer that might be the same as a Known Computer.
The Who Is On My Wifi Software was built from the ground up to handle this problem.
Because a user of a personal computer can change it's MAC Address, it would be possible for a user who has connected to the network before or who begins scanning a network immediately to be able to determine Known MAC Addresses residing on the network, and change their MAC Address to match one of the computers on the white-list.
Who Is On My Wifi handles this problem by not relying simply on the MAC Address to determine whether a computer is on the White List or not.
Who Is On My Wifi creates a Digital Signature of every computer that is currently on the network. This Digital Signature can be compromised of any remote identifiable information. Immediately, MAC Addresses, IP Addresses, and Netbios names are in use in the software.
Future plans include allowing a user of the Who Is On My Wifi software to also include specific port fingerprinting as well.
What this basically means is that even if a computer that joins your network is able to change their local computer's mac address to a Known Mac Address, they would also have to have the same IP Address if not using DHCP, or they would also have to have the same Netbios name for Who Is On My Wifi to not detect them.
This is similar to how viruses are detected by Anti-Virus software.
This is an area of the software that is still being enhanced and improved upon, but it is already showing much promise.
