Why Monitor a Wireless Network?

There are many reasons people would like to know who is on their wireless network.

Home Users

For Home Users, it might be the fear that a neighbor or outsider is on their network and soaking up bandwidth by using Youtube. This would cause their own internet to be slower.

There is also the fear that someone who uses your home wireless network might download mp3s or do something else illegal potentially subjecting the owner of the wireless network to some kind of legal liability or at least an inconvenient call from the authorities.

Corporations

For businesses the reasons can be much more financially motivated.

If a computer can connect to the LAN of a financial or medical institution through their wireless network, this break in could cause severe financial damages.

The outsider could be intentionally trying to view the businesses private records putting their customers private data at risk.

An outsider could also be exposing their internal network to viruses which could cost thousands of employee hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to effectively clean.

And sometimes for businesses the largest danger from viruses doesn't come from outsiders breaking in through their wireless network as much as it is trusted employees who bring to work home laptops that are infected with viruses as well.

A good monitoring program should be able to notify and help eliminate any of these threats and fears from home or corporate users.
