What is a Computer Network?

Computers need to connect to each other to be able to communicate or see each other. In the beginning, 2 computers could see each other if both of them had a direct "Wired" connection to each other. You could simply place a "Wired" connection between the two computers, set their IP settings correctly, and the two computers were now aware of each other and could communicate.

This worked great for 2 computers, but imagine how complicated it would become with 10 computers all needing direct connections to each other. There would be a lot of extra wires.

So, they came up with a device called a Switch.

The Switch's job is to act like the spoke in a bicycle wheel or more appropriately a telephone operator. All computers that want to communicate with each other simply have 1 connection directly to the switch. And when they want to communicate with another computer, they send their message to the switch, and the switch decides which computer it should go to.

Switches also have the ability to not just send communications to other computers, they also have the ability to send communication messages to other switches. This allows for networks to grow very large which each computer only needing to have 1 direct connection to one of the switches on the network to be able to communicate with all other computers on the network.

This is part of the hardware side of what the modern internet is made up of.
