What is a Wireless Router?
The modern Wireless Router that you probably have running on a home network is a highly involved device that contains many different features that all used to be separate.
When most people purchase a Linksys Wireless Router, they're actually purchasing a single device that handles all of the following functionality.
It acts like a Switch - this means that all computers that are connected to it by connecting to this single device are able to communicate with each other.
It acts like a Router - this means that it "Routes" traffic from a private network to a public network and vice versa. This is why it is usually where people plug in their Cable Modem or DSL connection.
It acts like a Firewall - this means that between the public and private networks, it only allows in the messages that you want without allowing in all messages.
It basically lets you have a private network where you can see all of the other computers that should be on your private network. It lets all of these private computers connect to the public internet. And it allows for all of this to happen relatively safely.
