Wireless Encryption Methods
Compare WEP, WPA, and WPA2
You may be asking yourself, why should I even encrypt my network if your software is going to detect intruders anyways?
Wireless Encryption is one of the important steps to help in Preventing Unknown computers from gaining access to your network. And even if it doesn't keep out all intruders, it is important to at least make it more difficult for them.
Wireless Encryption basically means to encrypt the messages that are sent between your computer's wireless network adapter and the wireless router. Because the signal is basically going over radio waves, it's important to encrypt the signal to keep other people from being able to listen to the radio broadcast and hear your sensitive information.
These different encryption methods also force someone who wants to join your network to know the encryption key before they can join the wireless signal, which is what ultimately lets them join your network.
But which Wireless Encryption Method should you choose?
There are several different technologies commonly in use to help encrypt your wireless communications.
WEP - Wired Equivalent Privacy
WPA - Wi-Fi Protected Access
WPA2 - Wi-Fi Protected Access (new standard)
We'll cover each of them in more detail below.
In order to not have to have "Wired" connections to each other, the different computers all connect to a Wireless Router. The Wireless Router connects all of these private computers to each other which allows them to communicate, and also usually connects the network to the public internet.
